A custom carpentry job we recently completed was the restoration of a craftsman style door in a historic district of the University Heights neighborhood of San Diego. Following a recent home remodel and restoration, a water damaged door needed to be replaced to match the existing historical structure and detail. Utilizing modern building and carpentry methods, we successfully recreated the door to match all the existing details and features. The wood species of choice for this project was Douglas Fir- a strong and dimensional stable species, which is commonly used in structural and decorative carpentry applications.
Due to the door being exposed to the elements we constructed the door using a series of lamination of veneers and waterproof wood glue, a variant of “stave core” construction. By laminating the thinner strips of wood together we are able to create an extremely stable and durable door, as opposed to a single solid piece of wood, fluctuating with the changes of the elements. The utilization of these laminated stave cores with mortise and tenon construction, help create a durable and long-lasting product, while counteracting the natural deficiencies a product constructed of wood might be subjected to with everyday use.
