Our second project of 2023 was a San Diego deck construction project located just above Fashion Valley, with the task of reviving a dated outdoor living space. A 500 square foot composite deck, about 20 years old, had not aged well due to poor building methods and water damage. We were originally hired to do a complete rebuild of the deck construction with a new composite decking design, as well as completely replace the foundation and framing. The biggest challenges on this project were difficult site access, and accommodating the new design into the existing site conditions.
Demolition of the old decking and substructure.
Our project got off to a quick start with the help of Fetch Junk Removal removing the demo debris to make way for our new lumber delivery. With our site cleaned and prepped we began excavating for our new foundation piers with crushed stone base, and laying out the new framing. A new pressure treated lumber deck frame was constructed for our new double picture frame composite decking. Proper prep work and careful attention to detail during the framing process is key to a successful composite decking install. We opted to use 12” centers for our framing rather than the minimum of 16”, for an increased rigidity and to help reduce future any future sagging of the deck boards between joists. With our framing completed we were able to schedule our decking delivery, and start our layout for the new design.
New pressure treated framing and site work completed, ready for installation of Azek decking.
We used the PVC composite decking product TimberTech Azek in Vintage Mahogany for the new deck construction. With a combination of different hidden fastener products we created a completely fastener free surface. The new design was a double picture frame border, with a center divider to eliminate seams and butt joints. Due to the size of the deck and available material sizes, this was the best way to achieve the cleanest design with as little joints as possible. We worked around the increased rainy weather to complete the outdoor remodel project on schedule, and on budget. Our approach to building always begins with a finished product in mind. We took extra care to every detail, involving the homeowners throughout the building process, to ensure they were completely satisfied with their new deck. We had the opportunity to work on some other smaller exterior carpentry projects to complement the new deck and improve their outdoor living space. These projects included repairs to stabilize a leaning retaining wall, new post caps along the fence to conceal wiring for new lighting, repairing damaged foundation vents, and adding matching composite deck skirting to conceal keep out animals.
